Kafar Fort (Lebanon). Peace has also started to be restored in the border areas of South Lebanon due to the four-day ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. The people who had vacated their homes in the village due to the war have now started returning. Closed shops have reopened and vehicles are also seen on the roads. The outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war has seen several clashes between Lebanese extremist group Hezbollah and Israeli forces, causing some 55,500 Lebanese citizens to flee their homes in border areas, according to the International Organization for Migration. During this conflict, more than 100 people were killed in Lebanon and 12 in Israel. At least 12 civilians lost their lives in Lebanon, including three journalists.
This four-day ceasefire has provided temporary relief to the people of Lebanon’s border areas from air strikes, bombings and firing. In view of this, some people returned to see their damaged houses and are taking the remaining belongings safely with them. At the same time, some people have returned only to live here. Retired school principal Abdullah Kutish and his wife Saba, residents of Haula village, are also among those who left their homes due to the war. The couple left their home and went to live with their daughter in the northern region. They returned to their home on Friday, the day the ceasefire came into force, but found their garden completely dry due to not being watered for a long time.
Saba said, “We have also lost a lot because of this war, but the most important thing is that we are safe. If the situation remains calm like this, we will not leave our homes again.” However, many people say that there is little hope of peace being established. Khalil Ghanem, a resident of Marwaheen village on the western end of the border and operator of the café, returned on Saturday, but he did not come here to stay, but to take back the remaining goods from his café and then returned. Ghanem said, “We say that God will not let anything wrong happen, but now the situation is very difficult and as I see it, the situation is going to remain like this for a long time.”
