Tel Aviv: Indirect ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas are scheduled to resume on Saturday in Qatar’s capital Doha and Egypt’s capital Cairo. Sources in the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to send two delegations to restart talks. The Doha delegation will be led by Mossad chief David Barneya, while the team to Cairo will be led by Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar.
According to sources in Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office, he has agreed to send the delegations after pressure from the families of hostages and missing persons. The Israeli side withdrew from the talks last week after Hamas rejected several demands put forward by mediators. This includes a permanent ceasefire and the release of many Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons.
Top sources in the Israeli Defense Ministry told IANS that Israel would never agree to a permanent ceasefire and also had objections to the release of many Palestinian prisoners. According to these sources, Israel believes that its army has broken the back of Hamas and now Hamas can no longer stand militarily. During talks in Doha last week, Israel agreed to the release of 700 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 40 Israeli hostages, but withdrew from the talks after Hamas demanded a permanent ceasefire.
