The transport department has challaned 393 vehicles for flouting rules on the roads in Rishikesh after the commencement of the Chardham Yatra. Mohit Kothari, Assistant Divisional Transport Officer (Enforcement) of Rishikesh, which is called the gateway of Chardham Yatra, told here on Monday that from April 21 to April 30, the Transport Department, Rishikesh has challaned 393 vehicles violating the rules. He said that nine vehicles were also seized when violations of very serious nature were found. Kothari said that 16 private vehicles were challaned for commercial use and a fine of about four lakh rupees was collected.

He said that 44 passengers were booked for traveling in excess of capacity, 10 for charging high ticket price, 74 for driving without driving license, 10 for not pasting the list of rates on the vehicle, 41 for driving without fitness certificate, 47 challans were issued for driving without insurance and 64 for driving without paying tax. Kothari said that the state government has given strict instructions regarding the safety of the devotees, under which vehicles are being checked continuously. Significantly, the Chardham Yatra began on April 22 with the opening of the portals of Gangotri and Yamunotri on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. The doors of Kedarnath Dham were opened on 25 April while the doors of Badrinath Dham were opened on 27 April.
