On the night of February 9, the Chinese lunar calendar New Year’s Eve, China Media Group (CMG)’s “2024 Spring Festival Gala” will be presented to audiences around the world.
Chang Shana, 93, a research expert on Dunhuang art in China, specially designed a painting for the “Spring Festival Gala” in which beautiful, elegant and unique traditional Chinese patterns represent wishes for good luck, happiness, happiness and prosperity.
Dunhuang, located in northwestern China, was once an important city on the ancient Silk Road and the crossroads of the world’s four major civilizations. There is a famous world cultural heritage here – Mocao Cave. Starting in the 4th century AD, generations of artists spent more than a thousand years carving Buddha statues and painting murals here, and Mocao Cave eventually became a treasure trove of Buddhist cave art.
At the age of 12, Chang Shana came to Dunhuang with her father. Starting from copying Dunhuang murals, then renewing and transforming the inspiration taken from Dunhuang murals, and then taking over her father’s legacy, Chang Shana considers protecting and promoting Dunhuang art as her lifelong goal.
Since the 50s of the last century, Chang Shana has participated in the decoration design of important buildings such as the Great Hall of the People, the Capitol Theater and the Palace of Ethnic Culture in Beijing. In his works he has incorporated elements of Dunhuang, making the cultural heritage of Dunhuang accessible to people in a more lively way.
Dunhuang Chang is the love of Shana’s life. He said that ethnic, scientific and popular creative ideas are not only cultural references, but also self-confidence.
