Chidambaram said, crude oil prices were below US$ 60 between 2014 and 2021, yet the government has not passed on the benefit of reduction in crude oil prices to people using petrol and diesel.
New Delhi. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday alleged that the central government was making profits by imposing higher taxes on fuel. He also added that this is being done at the cost of common people. He said that the prices of petrol and diesel have been kept artificially high, which is one of the reasons for rising inflation. The former Union minister said petrol prices were deregulated by the NDA and UPA governments between 2010 and 2014, though the deregulation reform has stopped since September 2014.
Chidambaram said, crude oil prices were below US$ 60 between 2014 and 2021, yet the government has not passed on the benefit of reduction in crude oil prices to people using petrol and diesel. He said that in 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, the price of crude oil rose sharply, but now it has come down to 75 US dollars. It is clear that the government is making profits through high taxes and cesses at the cost of the people, he alleged. Chidambaram said one of the reasons for high inflation is keeping the prices of petrol and diesel artificially high.
