“The media claim is not in line with our understanding,” said a Biden administration official on condition of anonymity, but the official did not elaborate on how the report was incorrect, nor did he elaborate on whether China Efforts are being made to set up espionage bases in Cuba. The official said the issue predates Biden’s presidency as Beijing has made efforts to strengthen its intelligence bases around the world.
China accused of spreading rumors
“This is not a new issue but a persistent issue,” the official said. The official claimed that the PRC (People’s Republic of China) had upgraded its intelligence bases in Cuba in 2019. An official at China’s embassy in Washington pointed to a statement Friday by a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman. The Chinese ministry accused the US of ‘spreading rumors and slander’ by referring to the Cuban spy station.
Cuba called the report ‘false’
There was no immediate comment from the Cuban government. On Thursday, Cuba’s deputy foreign minister, Carlos Fernandez de Cosio, dismissed the journal’s report as “completely false”. He said Cuba rejects any foreign military presence in Latin America and the Caribbean. Tension has increased between the US and China over the alleged spy balloons seen in the US sky a few months ago.
