Acceleration in China’s aggression
This was the first round of the ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME). For the first time in the region warships from India, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei and Vietnam were participating. This exercise started on 7th May and ended on 8th May. China continues to be aggressive on the South China Sea. Here border disputes with many of its neighbors continue. During the AIME, apart from the Chinese ships, a research ship was also present at the exercise site. This drill was being executed in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Vietnam.
Chinese ships could not come close
It was told by Indian defense sources that the Chinese ships could not come close and because of this the drill was not affected. Nor were the ships close enough to pose a danger. However, the Chinese ships were being carefully monitored. Earlier, India had participated by a Guided Missile Destroyer INS Delhi and Stealth Frigate INS Satpura during the harbor phase of the exercise. It was held at the Changai Naval Base in Singapore. China is being monitored very actively.
India would have been closer to ASEAN countries
While China’s relations with many ASEAN countries are deteriorating, India is getting closer to these countries through military exercises. India’s defense ties with these countries are getting stronger. Apart from this, many training programs are also being run, the purpose of which is to tell about operating fighter planes and submarines. Along with this, the supply of weapons has also been increased from India. For example, India has supplied three batteries of the BrahMos supersonic missile anti-ship system to the Philippines.
Each battery offers a range of up to 290 km with a strike range of Mach 2.8. The deal with the Philippines was signed in January last year for $375 million. Apart from this, this deal with Indonesia and Vietnam is also going to be finalized. It is believed that with this, India’s relations with ASEAN countries will be further strengthened.
