China has invited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on an official visit to the country with the aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation with Bangladesh in all fields. “We will take a decision on the (Dhaka) visit at an appropriate time,” Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmood told reporters after meeting China’s Ambassador to the country Yao Wen on Sunday. Wain met Mahmood after he won the general elections for the fourth time. The main opposition party ‘Bangladesh Nationalist Party’ (BNP) had boycotted the elections held on January 7. Mahmood said talks were held to choose a mutually convenient date for the Prime Minister’s visit to Beijing. Prime Minister Hasina paid an official visit to China from July 1-6, 2019.

He also participated in the 13th Summer Davos Forum in Dalian. He had met Chinese President Xi Jinping during that time. Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement after the meeting between Mahmood and Wen, “China has reiterated its desire to further strengthen bilateral relations during the tenure of the new government in Bangladesh.” Soon after, Chinese President Xi congratulated Hasina and expressed confidence in strengthening bilateral relations. Bangladesh Foreign Ministry officials said China wanted Hasina to visit Beijing in September last year but she could not travel at that time due to elections and other events. China has extended this invitation after Ruling Party General Secretary and Road Transport Minister Ubaidul Qadir said that India stood with Bangladesh when BNP tried to sabotage the elections.

“There is no reason for tension in our relations with India,” Qadir told reporters after meeting Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Kumar Verma in Dhaka. A senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs said on condition of anonymity. But said Dhaka will maintain a balance in relations with both India and China as “we need both for our stability and development.”
