A local resident said on Monday that Chinese authorities went ahead with their plans to demolish the Chan minarets and dome roof of the Najiaying Mosque in Nagu city of Yunnan province. The area is home to a sizeable section of the minority Muslim community ‘Hui’ who are now under pressure due to the police crackdown. On Saturday, police officers with batons dispersed the crowd outside the mosque. Several videos of the clash have been shared on social media.

A local woman said that they wanted to forcibly do the demolition, so the people here had gone to stop them. The woman said, ‘If they try to bring it down, we will definitely not let them do so.’ Two witnesses said police had made an undisclosed number of arrests over the incident and that several hundred officers were in town as of Monday. Due to this whole incident, the tension in the area has increased considerably.

He said that after the clash, people in the surrounding areas of the mosque were facing internet problem and other connectivity issues. A notice issued by the local government on Sunday said an investigation had been launched into the matter which “seriously harmed social management and order”. The notice ordered “people to stop the illegal and criminal acts immediately”. In the notice, it has been said to ‘be soft with those who surrender before June 6’.
