Beijing/Harbin. Nine people were killed and two others were seriously injured after the roof of a school gym collapsed in the city of Qiqihar in China’s Heilongjiang province. There were 19 people in the No. 34 Middle School in Longsha district when the roof of the gym, built on an area of about 1,200 square meters, collapsed on Sunday. The Municipal Corporation Search and Rescue Headquarters said that four people survived the accident, but 15 people were trapped.

State news agency Xinhua reported on Monday that 13 people have been evacuated so far, of whom three were found dead and six others succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The rescue operation is still going on. Preliminary investigation revealed that construction workers constructing another educational building nearby had illegally placed perlite (a material used in construction) on the roof of the gym and it had gained weight due to water absorption during rains.

Officials said that the matter is being thoroughly investigated. The in-charge of the construction company has been taken into police custody, Xinhua reported. Meanwhile, heavy rains and landslides in eastern China killed at least five people while three people are missing. During this, more than 1,500 people have been shifted to safer places. The country’s official media gave this information on Sunday. China National Radio reported that a village in Fuyang district in Hangzhou was flooded on Saturday afternoon and many houses were hit by it.

China Central Television (CCTV) reported that the rain caused part of a mountain to collapse and cause a landslide, affecting several places in the area and leaving more than 1,600 homes without power. More than 1,500 people in the area have been evacuated to safer places, Xinhua news agency reported. Every year, seasonal floods affect large parts of China, especially in the semi-tropical south. However, the northern region has reported its worst floods this year in the last 50 years.
