This exercise of India and ASEAN countries started on 2nd May and is to continue till 8th May. The Philstar Global report quoted South China Sea expert Ray Powell as saying that the first group of Chinese militia ships changed course on Sunday evening and headed towards the warships of the ASEAN countries. Powell, who served in the US Air Force, said, “The Chinese ships are not moving very fast and it remains to be seen whether they will stay on course or not.”
Chinese ship just 70 km away in sea
After this, another group of Chinese warships left for Zamora Reef on Monday and went towards warships of ASEAN countries which are exercising in that area. The report states that Chinese ships are still 70 km away from the navies of ASEAN countries. Powell said, “My guess is that China is not happy with what India and the ASEAN countries are doing there. ASEAN countries are conducting exercises in the area of the South China Sea which China claims as its own.
Powell said, “I think this is to send a message to the ASEAN countries and to India that this is China’s maritime territory and Beijing is going to monitor their stay in this area.” China claims that the South China Sea is its territory. With this claim of China, it intrudes into the Philippines Special Economic Zone. China’s claim to the Nine Dash Line shares its border with the maritime border of Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia.
1800 naval personnel of India-ASEAN are taking part
The navies of Singapore and India are co-organizers for the first time in this exercise. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense of Singapore has said that this exercise to be held in the sea is going to be held in the international waters, which is the transit route of the Philippines. Nine warships are participating in this exercise. Apart from this, 6 naval aircraft of India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines are also participating. A total of 1800 military personnel from ASEAN and India are involved in this exercise. Powell said that I do not think that the Chinese warships will do anything that is dangerous. ASEAN has 6 warships, while the Chinese militia ships are not warships but they are very dangerous for a fishing vessel or a small vessel of the Philippines Coast Guard.
