Beijing. China’s ruling Communist Party has called for strengthening national security measures in response to the risks posed by advances in artificial intelligence (AI).
A meeting chaired by party leader and President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for concerted efforts to improve political security and internet data and artificial intelligence security, state-run Xinhua news agency said. Xi, chairman of the party’s National Security Commission, organized the meeting to discuss “being aware of the complex and challenging situation facing national security”.
Xinhua quoted Xi as saying that China needed “new ways of development with a new security framework”. Notably, highly capable AI chatboxes such as ChatGPT have raised concerns about things being out of human control. Scientists and technology leaders, including high-level executives from Microsoft and Google, issued a new warning on Tuesday about the threat artificial intelligence poses to mankind.
“Mitigating the risk of extinction caused by AI should be a global priority, along with other societal-level risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” said a related statement.
