Recently, the Chinese National Forestry and Grassland Bureau, National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Natural Resources, etc. five departments jointly issued the “National Botanical Garden System Layout Plan”, which stipulated that the two national botanical gardens established Based on the botanical gardens, 14 more National Botanical Garden candidate gardens will be selected and included in the National Botanical Garden system layout to create a new pattern of biodiversity conservation.
According to the construction targets of the National Botanical Garden System, about 5 National Botanical Gardens will be established by the year 2025, so that more than 70 percent of the national key protected wild plants and more than 55 percent of the rare and endangered wild plants will be conserved in the country, and Initially a coordinated and efficient National Botanical Garden management system will be established. By the year 2035, efforts will be made to establish about 10 National Botanical Gardens.
China is one of the countries with the richest plant diversity in the world, with more than 38 thousand species of higher plants spanning 6 climatic zones and 8 main vegetation types. Over a long time, China has built nearly 200 botanical gardens and protected more than 23 thousand plant species, accounting for about 60 percent of the entire country’s native plant species. They have played an active role in maintaining plant diversity and protecting rare and endangered plant genes.
Last year, two national botanical gardens established in both the cities of Beijing and Guangzhou were first put into operation.
