China’s Foreign Minister leaves for Moscow after meeting with US National Security Advisor

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi left for Moscow on Monday for security talks after a two-day meeting with US President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan in Malta over the weekend. Wang also oversees foreign policy affairs of the ruling Communist Party. China’s Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement that Wang will visit Russia from Monday to Thursday, where he will hold several rounds of discussions on strategic security cooperation between Beijing and Moscow. America and China are face to face over Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
China has refrained from taking any side in the war, saying that while on one hand the territorial sovereignty of a country should be respected, on the other hand Western countries should be aware of Russia’s security concerns regarding the expansion of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation). But attention should be paid. China has accused the US of prolonging the war by providing arms to Ukraine, while the US says these weapons are necessary to defend against Russian aggression. In recent years, the closeness between China and Russia has increased, as relations between both (China and Russia) with Western countries are continuously deteriorating.
China is looking for support as it seeks to transform the US-led international order into one that is more favorable to its vision. China last month helped expand the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), inviting six more countries to join the five-nation grouping. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning described Wang’s visit to Russia as a routine visit for in-depth talks on key strategic security interests. Wang discussed the situation in Ukraine in his weekend meetings with Sullivan. Both sides described the talks as clear, concrete and constructive.
The talks took place in an effort to stabilize China and the US’s volatile relations and resolve differences on security, trade, technology and human rights. Details of the conversation were not released. Wang stepped down as foreign minister late last year and took up the post of Communist Party foreign affairs chief. However, he was again given the post of Foreign Minister in July this year after the sudden disappearance of his successor Chin Cong. It is not clear what happened to Chhin, but there is speculation that differences with the ruling party may have been the reason for his disappearance.
Recently, China’s Defense Minister Li Shangfu has also not been seen for almost three weeks, due to which speculations about him have intensified.
