Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is on a visit to Washington in an effort to provide stability to relations between the US and China amid bitterness. During his visit, there may also be talks about the summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to meet National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Friday. Yi, who arrived in the US on a three-day visit, met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday afternoon. This raised hopes that there could be stability in relations between the two countries.
After Wang and Blinken’s initial meeting, the Chinese side said, “The two sides discussed China-US relations and issues of common concern in a constructive atmosphere.”
The US State Department said the two leaders discussed “areas of difference” and “areas of collaboration”, while Blinken “reiterated that the United States will stand up for our interests and values and those of our allies and partners” ”
US officials said before the meeting that they would emphasize to Wang Yi that China should increase its role on the global stage if it wants to become a major responsible international player.
The US is disappointed with China for supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine and maintaining silence about the Israel-Hamas war. “China should use its potential as a dominant power to foster peace in West Asia,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.
“We know that China has relations with many countries in the region, and we would urge them to use those relations, communication lines, for peace and stability,” he said.
