The post of Prime Minister has been announced in the session of the Parliament of China. China on Saturday named Li Qiang, a close confidant of supreme leader Xi Jinping, as the country’s next prime minister. Under his leadership, China overcame the challenge of Corona. While Li Keqiang’s tenure as prime minister ended with this parliament session. All the names of the new leadership were approved at the CPC meeting chaired by Xi a few weeks ago.

Li was nominated by Xi and appointed to the post at a Saturday morning session of the National People’s Congress, China’s formal parliament. This comes a day after 69-year-old Xi was elected as the President of China. Jinping had earlier secured a third five-year term as the country’s leader, becoming only the second leader after Mao to do so. Li is known for imposing a strict “zero COVID” lockdown in Shanghai as the party boss of the Chinese financial centre. During this, he continued to prove his loyalty to Xi by ignoring the complaints of the common people on the lack of food, even medical care.

Li is best known as the premier of his native Zhejiang, a relatively prosperous southeastern province now known as a technology and manufacturing powerhouse. Before the pandemic, Li had previously built a reputation friendly to private industry in Shanghai and Zhejiang, even as Xi enforced tighter political controls and anti-coercion.

Jinping was the party secretary of China’s Zhejiang Province and he was looking for a good leader to handle the party in this region. It was this search that drew him to Li Qiang. When Xi Jinping became the leader of the National Party, he made Qiang the governor of Zhejiang Province in 2012. Then in 2016, he was also made the secretary of Jiangsu and in 2017 he was made the party secretary of Shanghai, one of China’s most important cities.
