The announcement made by the NBS on Tuesday comes at a time when China’s economic growth has come down to its second lowest level in five decades and in the year 2022, China recorded a modest growth of three percent. The bureau counts only the population of mainland China, excluding Hong Kong, Macao and the self-governing Taiwan, as well as foreign residents. The recent World Population Prospects 2022 report by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Population Division) projects that India will overtake China as the most populous country in the world in 2023.

Situation worsened by ‘one child policy’

According to the report, India’s population is estimated to be 1.668 billion in the year 2050, which is more than China’s estimated population of 1.317 billion by the middle of this century. The bureau said on Tuesday that the country’s population stood at 1.411.75 billion with 9.56 million births against 1.041 million deaths. Of these, 72.206 crore are men and 68.969 crore are women. The ‘one family one child’ policy was abolished in China in 2016. Along with this, there is a trend in the country to give preference to male children to carry forward the family name. After abolishing this policy, China encouraged families to have more than one child, although this did not achieve much success.

India will leave China behind

The high cost of raising children in China’s cities is often cited as a reason. This is seen only in most parts of East Asia, where the birth rate has declined rapidly. China has long been the world’s most populous country, but India is likely to overtake it soon. The estimated population of India is now 1.4 billion and it is increasing continuously. It is believed that the last recorded population decline in China was during the ‘Great Leap Forward’ in the late 1950s.
