Mogadishu: Nearly 54 people have died since January due to the cholera outbreak in Somalia. The World Health Organization (WHO) gave this information on Thursday. WHO said a total of 4,388 cases of cholera have been reported. Such cases have been reported from all six states and 30 districts.
“The high-risk districts are located in the river basin,” WHO said in its latest epidemiological update released in the Somali capital Mogadishu. The Somali Health Ministry last week blamed the country’s ongoing cholera outbreak on population growth. People do not have access to safe water and proper sanitation hence the outbreak of this disease is increasing.
According to the United Nations, in addition to the ongoing cholera outbreak in Somalia, the country was also hit by El Nino floods, which affected more than 2 million people, displaced 1.2 million from their homes, and killed 118 people. . According to WHO, there were more than 18,304 cumulative cholera cases and 46 deaths in Somalia in 2023, including more than 10,000 children under five years of age.
