Britain’s opposition Labor Party is demanding a freeze on funds donated to the ruling Conservative Party by an Indian rice businessman who is under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in India on charges of fraud and money laundering. . Karan Channa, chief of global rice brand Amira, is being probed by the ED over allegations of illegal diversion of bank loans to shell companies. The businessman is yet to respond to the allegations.
It is believed that the businessman has since September 2019 through his British company Amira G. Through Foods, the Conservative Party has donated about 2,20,000 British pounds. Margaret Hodge, a senior Labor MP, told the Guardian newspaper on Saturday that the Conservative Party should establish the source of the money and the money should be withheld until the investigation is completed. The Conservatives are relying too much on donors and not doing the proper due diligence, he said.
They should now be forced to do so by the new law. The development follows reports from Delhi that the ED on May 2 conducted searches under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act at 21 locations in India belonging to Channa, Indian company Amira Pure Foods and other parties. The charge sheet is yet to be filed in the case. ED says further investigation is on.
