Dense tropical rainforests and rivers exist in rural areas of Suriname. The population there is scattered and the infrastructure is weak. Electricity facility has not reached all the rural residents.

These days, with the help of Chinese companies, small hybrid power stations are being constructed in the lower Suriname River. The desire of the local people for stable power supply will be fulfilled. After completion of the construction of the power plant, electricity will be supplied to nine nearby villages through dedicated transmission lines.

It is said that the United Nations had planned to make clean energy completely common by the year 2030. The Government of Suriname accordingly invited tenders to build a power plant. The Chinese enterprise won the bid. After construction began, the Chinese enterprise cooperated with local residents and created conditions to increase their income.

It is noteworthy that in June 2023, the Chinese enterprise has completed the construction of the first hybrid power station there. Now about 40 percent of the construction work of the second power plant has been completed. It is estimated that production of the second power plant will start by the end of this year. The construction of the fifth power plant will be completed in September 2025. The total power output of the five power stations will then be able to meet the electricity needs of 14 thousand rural residents. This is equivalent to 7 percent of Suriname’s rural population.
