India on Wednesday urged global leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) to implement the Paris Agreement through the Global Stocktake process, emphasizing the principles of equity and climate action. It came after COP28 negotiators reached a significant agreement on calls to ‘move away’ from fossil fuels. Speaking at the closing session of COP28, Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said the collective efforts here have sent positive signals to the world in strengthening the commitment to maintain the temperature targets set in Paris.

Bhupendra Yadav said, “The way forward must be based on equity and climate justice, let us implement the Paris Agreement in letter and spirit through the Global Stocktake process.” The first global stocktake deal was adopted after nearly two weeks of hectic negotiations and urged countries to accelerate efforts towards phasing out uninterruptible coal power, which India and China are planning to phase out from coal. There is a decline after strong opposition.

Bhupendra Yadav wrote in the tweet that today, the world came together at COP28 in Dubai, UAE to demonstrate positive cooperation and camaraderie for an action-oriented approach towards a green and healthy planet. Through its G20 presidency under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India demonstrated its resolve to make climate action a collaborative process that ‘leaves no one behind’. At COP28, India carried forward the same spirit embodied in the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

Negotiators at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (UN COP28) agreed on Wednesday that the world must stop using planet-warming fossil fuels. This is being considered an important step towards changing the way the world operates. However, the question is how soon and who will pay for it. COP28 President Sultan Al-Jaber addressed a plenary session in Dubai after more than two weeks of discussions, urging the world to try to find a way to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
