Dr. Seema Javed, New Delhi: India is presiding over the G20 grouping this year and is going to host the G20 Leaders Summit on 9-10 September. Being the President of G20, the reins of climate leadership of this group are also in the hands of India. These days the way the world is grappling with the effects of climate change due to global warming, investing in sustainable energy systems seems to be the only way out. By adopting this, global warming can be limited to 1.5 °C according to the Paris Agreement.

This is also the key to the success of the COP28 going to be held in Dubai city of UAE in the coming November-December. Otherwise, due to global warming, sometimes deadly heat, sometimes heavy rains and landslides, sometimes incidents like the driest August in hundred years of history are becoming common. This bad weather pattern is ruining our daily life from our crops. In such a situation, the world is now standing at a critical juncture to usher in the era of clean energy.

Fall in emissions from coal-fired power

Global energy think tank Amber has released its third annual report taking stock of the per capita thermal power emissions in the G-20 countries. According to this report, Australia and South Korea have emerged as the top two polluters in terms of per capita thermal power pollution. This place of his has not changed since the year 2020. Per capita coal-fired electricity emissions have fallen in 12 of the G-20 economies since 2015.

However, per capita G-20 emissions from coal-fired electricity are projected to increase by about 9% from 1.5 tonnes of CO2 in 2015 to 1.6 tonnes of CO2 in 2022. A tripling of renewable capacities by 2030 is essential to keep warming within reach of 1.5 degrees Celsius. This is possible only when solar, wind and bio energy all three are used strongly together, on behalf of the emerging economies. This in turn will help in phasing out coal and other fossil fuels.

India can play its big role

India’s own plans to scale up renewable energy dovetail perfectly with COP28’s goal of tripling renewable energy by 2030. In such a situation, India can also ensure that developed and developing countries also follow suit by investing in their sustainable and clean energy systems and increasing them three times. This allows each country to reduce its per capita emissions and this is the key to the success of COP28. The G20 Leaders’ Summit, which is going to be held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, is a great opportunity for this work. A 43% reduction in emissions by 2030 is needed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
