COP28: ‘Soft’ role without restrictions on fossil fuels; Will the crisis deepen due to rising temperatures?

Pudhari Online Desk: Many amendments to the draft draft adopted at the Conference of Parties (COP 28) in Dubai have been softened. The strict wording of the amendment referring to fossil fuel use in the original text has been changed.
Due to climate change and global temperature rise the question of the existence of the world has arisen. The most important factor causing pollution is fossil fuels. This includes energy resources like petrol, diesel, coal etc. Scientists are of the opinion that completely shutting down the vapor phase of fossil fuels will control global temperature rise like a banana. This issue would have taken center stage at COP28 in Dubai.

The initial draft of the Council would have been worded as Phase – out of Fossil Fuels. But Saudi Arabia and other fossil fuel supplier countries protested. After this a wording like “reduce the production and consumption of fossil fuels” was created. But the countryman and his son-in-law in Europe took objection. The wording itself is very ‘weak’, don’t think so or Deshani Mandalay. Subsequently, the phrase “transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems” was drafted. This means ‘energy transition from fossil fuels’.

At COP 28, ambitious targets would have been required to achieve the goal of keeping the temperature rise at just 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. It would be necessary to draw up a time-bound program to limit temperature rise or stop burning fossil fuels. But the council was very upset when such a draft was made.

India would have had some issues regarding coal trade. India and some other countries are largely dependent on coal power for energy production. Therefore, it would be difficult for India to completely stop the energy use of coal in the near future. Particularly, two years ago the council in Glasgow would have been unanimous in banning coal-burning. The draft of COP28 initially contained the issue of banning the development of new thermal energy projects, which was objected to by India and some other countries. Therefore, the wording or draft of the Glasgow Council was taken into consideration.

The wording of the article on ending the use of fossil fuels in a timely manner should be original, even though there may be disagreements between different countries on some days or councils. Some other issues in the draft appear to be controversial. The final draft will be discussed again on Wednesday and will be sent to Mandla.
