Crackdown on deepfakes: MCA, Meta partner to tackle AI-generated misinformation

New Delhi: Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) and Meta have announced the launch of a fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp. Its purpose is to deal with deepfakes and AI-generated misleading content. This service will be available to the public in March, 2024. The pledge to crack down on deepfakes comes at a time when the world’s largest democracy is preparing for general elections. Lok Sabha elections are to be held in April-May this year.

According to a statement, MCA and Meta are working on launching a fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp in an effort to combat content created using artificial intelligence (AI). Content created using artificial intelligence (AI) can deceive people on matters of public interest. Such content is commonly referred to as deepfakes. The purpose of this service is to help people connect with verified and reliable information. According to the statement, this service will be available from March 2024. MCA will set up a deepfake detection unit to manage all inbound messages received on the WhatsApp helpline.
