Cuba: President Miguel Dias-Canel approves new five-year term

Havana. Cuba’s National Assembly on Wednesday approved a new five-year term for President Miguel Diaz-Canel. The decision was taken when the island nation was engulfed in a deep economic crisis. More than 400 representatives of the National Assembly took office in the early hours of Wednesday and then convened a meeting of the house to elect the leadership of the government and the president. These representatives were elected in the elections held in the country in March. Of the 462 members of the House, 459 voted in favor of extending Dias-Kanell’s term for another five years.

Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa was also re-elected to his position. He got the support of 439 members. President Dias-Canel (63) said the emphasis would be on increasing food production and exports. He said controlling inflation is a priority in the country’s “battle being fought on the economic stage”. The decision to confirm President Díaz-Canel’s term comes at a time when the Cuban economy has crumbled in recent years.

GDP has declined by 11 percent in 2020 after the global pandemic. The official rate of inflation from January to October last year was 40 percent. In July 2021, the public also demonstrated widely against President Dias-Canel. During that time shops were vandalized and vehicles were damaged. For this, the government held groups in America responsible for inciting violence in Cuba.
