Pakistani authorities have given more than one million Afghans living in the country illegally until November 1 to leave voluntarily, or face arrest and deportation. The reasons behind the large-scale evictions are increasing terrorist attacks, economic crisis and deteriorating relations between the Taliban government in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Why is Pakistan deporting Afghans?

Analysts say the reasons behind the large-scale evictions are growing insurgency, economic crisis and sourness between the Taliban governments in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Pakistani government said the deportation of Afghans living illegally in Pakistan is motivated by the security crisis, following an increase in the number of attacks in Pakistan’s border areas in recent months. Bugti told reporters when announcing the eviction order in early October that there had been 24 suicide attacks since January, 14 of which were carried out by Afghan civilians. Pakistan has accused the Taliban government of providing safe haven to terrorist groups, saying terrorist groups like the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) are behind the attacks.
