Cairo : The death toll in the devastating earthquake in Syria has risen to 8,500 and the toll is expected to rise further in the coming days. This information was given by Rick Brennan, Acting Regional Emergencies Director of the Eastern Mediterranean Office of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Brennan told the briefing that the figures we have now are about 4,000 killed and about 2,500 wounded in government-held areas and about 4,500 killed and 7,500 wounded in the northwest. It is difficult to tell the number, as it was increasing every day.
Syrian Health Minister Hassan al-Gabbash told the Al-Mayadeen broadcaster that the death toll from the earthquake in government-controlled areas stood at 1,414, while another 2,349 were injured. In total, more than 31,000 people were killed and thousands of homes destroyed in powerful earthquakes that rocked Turkey and parts of Syria last Monday.
