Damascus. The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria five days ago has passed 28,000, and rescue operations continue as hopes of finding more survivors grow increasingly bleak. Rescue workers have been working continuously for the last five days in the bitter cold to save lives after the earthquake. During the rescue operation, more than 12 people were rescued on Saturday. A man named Ibrahim Zakaria, who was repeatedly fainting and regaining consciousness, did not know for how many days he had been buried under the debris of his house. Zakaria was rescued on Friday night.

“I thought I was going to die and it would be impossible for me to live again,” Zakaria told The Associated Press at the hospital on Saturday. Seven months old in Atankya were among those rescued on Saturday after the earthquake. A child from and a family from Kahramanmaras are involved. A family of five was rescued from the rubble of a building in the city of Nurdagi in Gaziantep province, bordering Syria, television network Haberturk reported. A man and his three-year-old daughter were pulled out of the rubble in the town of Islahiye. A seven-year-old girl was rescued in Hatay province. In Ilbistan, 20-year-old Melissa Ulku and another person were rescued after being trapped under rubble for 132 hours. Turkish TV station NTV reported that a 44-year-old man was pulled out after being trapped under rubble for 138 hours in Iskenderun, Hatay province.

Rescue workers called it a miracle and said they didn’t expect to find anyone, but they kept digging and found the eyes of a man who was giving his name. NTV reported that a child was pulled out of the rubble in Antakya, 140 hours after the earthquake in the same province. Meanwhile, a woman named Zeynep Kahrman, who was pulled out of the debris after 50 hours of effort, died in the hospital at night. The rescue operations continue amid growing public frustration with the Turkish government’s response to the earthquake. This earthquake has killed 24,617 people in Turkey alone and at least 80,000 people have been injured.
