The UN health agency said on Tuesday that the death toll in the ongoing violence in Sudan has risen to 604. The new figures come amid talks between representatives of rival parties in Saudi Arabia. World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters that more than 5,100 people had been injured in the violence. The Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate, which only collects records of civilian casualties, said on Monday that the number of casualties had reached 487.
The clash began on April 15 after months of escalating tensions between the army led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan and a paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces. According to the UN refugee agency, around 700,000 people have been displaced due to the violence and some 3.7 million have fled to other places in the country. On Monday, Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said talks between delegations from the two rival sides were expected to continue for a few more days in the coastal city of Jeddah.
