Delay in voting on resolution to stop fighting in Gaza in UN Security Council
[ad_1]
The UN Security Council did not vote on a resolution sponsored by Arab countries calling for a halt to the fighting in Gaza as of Tuesday morning. Security Council member countries have intensified talks to avoid vetoing this resolution by the US.
The council said at 5pm on Monday there would be no vote, and diplomats said talks were underway to persuade the US, Israel’s close ally, to abstain or vote “in favour” of the resolution.
The key issue for member states is how to implement the much-needed aid operation. Human Rights Watch, an international human rights advocacy organization, on Monday accused Israel of deliberately blocking the supply of food, water and fuel to Gaza.
The resolution presented on Monday morning called for an “immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities” to allow humanitarian aid to arrive, the diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, said. On December 8, the US vetoed a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
