Demonstration in Israel against Netanyahu’s judicial reform plan

People block roads in Israel on Thursday during a protest against a controversial plan for judicial reform. Thursday’s demonstrations were expected to be on a smaller scale, but protesters are hoping to remind the government of their presence and their ability to shut down the country by demonstrating against judicial reform. Protesters holding Israeli flags blocked major streets and squares in Tel Aviv and other cities. Demonstrations were also held outside the residences of Israel’s President and the country’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Police said a protester has been arrested for creating the disturbance. Leaders leading the demonstrations have called Thursday’s protest a campaign for “equality” against rising inflation in the country and against the military’s plan to exempt Orthodox Jews. Demonstrators paint a street near the National Theater in Tel Aviv white in protest against recent milk price hikes.

A section of the country is strongly opposing the judicial reform plan of Netanyahu, who is facing a corruption case. Demonstrations also include people from business, technology sector, military. The protesters say that with the implementation of the new scheme, the Supreme Court will be weakened and the scope of judicial review on the law and the decisions of the government will be reduced.
