DGCA fines Air India Rs 30 lakh for urination scandal

Aviation regulator DGCA has slapped a fine of Rs 30 lakh on the Air India airline in connection with the incident of a passenger allegedly urinating on a female co-traveller during a New York-Delhi flight. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in a statement issued on Friday that the license of the pilot-in-command of that aircraft has also been suspended for three months.
Along with this, it said that a fine of three lakh rupees has also been imposed on the Director of Flight Services of Air India for failing to discharge his duties with reference to the incident which took place on November 26, 2022. A notice was issued to Air India when the matter came to the notice of the DGCA on January 4. The regulator has taken action against the airline for violation of various norms. This incident happened on November 26 last year.
A passenger named Shankar Mishra allegedly urinated on a female co-traveller during Air India’s New York-Delhi flight. Air India had a day earlier banned Mishra from traveling in the airline for four months. Earlier, the airline had imposed a travel ban of 30 days. Mishra was arrested after the matter came to the fore. Now he is lodged in jail in judicial custody. The DGCA said it has reviewed the reply sent by the airline management to its notice and decided to take this step.
