Volcker also did not say how her office plans to follow up on a report prepared by her predecessor Michelle Bachelet last August on China’s western Xinjiang region.
The new UN human rights chief Volker Turk said on Tuesday that his office has opened “ways of dialogue” on issues related to the rights of minorities, including Uyghur Muslims, in China. At the same time, he admitted that it did not match the expectations of activists who are in favor of giving a tougher message to China. Volcker also did not say how her office plans to follow up on a report prepared by her predecessor Michelle Bachelet last August on China’s western Xinjiang region.
The report indicated a “crime against humanity” with the Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang. Turk said the UN human rights office has noted concerns over alleged arbitrary detention of people in China and called for concrete measures in this regard. The UN human rights chief also expressed concern over the impact of the national security law brought in to suppress the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.
