Counting of votes continues in Pakistan, a day after voting was disrupted due to violence and internet shutdown. Pakistan voted on Thursday to elect its new government. Candidates supported by Imran Khan’s party are leading, while Nawaz Sharif’s ally Ishaq Dar said his party will form a coalition government with independent winners, GeoTV reported. Ishaq Dar also said that the independent candidates are in touch with Nawaz Sharif’s party. Speaking to Geo News on Friday, the former finance minister said that independents have contacted us, and they will join any party in the next 72 hours as per the Constitution.
Maryam Nawaz won NA-119 seat
According to the provisional results declared by the ECP, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz has won the NA-119 seat in Lahore with 83,855 votes. This is the first NA seat that he has won. PTI-backed Shehzad Farooq came second with 68,376 votes. Prime Minister and PMLA Chief Shahbaz Sharif has also won from NA-123 seat of Lahore.
The major political party in the contest is the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN), led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The party, which came to power for the third time with a clear majority in 2013, is looking to achieve another victory. Jailed Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), led by Bilawal Bhutto, son of late leader Benazir Bhutto.
