Digital India Act will have provisions for spy glasses, wearable devices

The draft of the Digital India Act will be ready after two more rounds of talks with the concerned people, the minister told PTI in a video conference interview after the first meeting in Bengaluru.
Electronics and Information Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar held a meeting on Thursday for the first time on the proposed Digital India Act. During this, he also discussed the related rules to deal with the issues related to gathering information through spy glasses and other wearable devices. The draft of the Digital India Act will be ready after two more rounds of talks with the concerned people, the minister told PTI in a video conference interview after the first meeting in Bengaluru.
He said the draft may come in April and it will also go through other stages of public consultation for about 45-60 days before being presented in Parliament for final approval. Chandrasekhar said, “We have consulted for the first time regarding the major structure of this law. A draft will be prepared on the basis of this discussion. The draft will be widely discussed for 45 to 60 days. In such a situation, the draft bill may be ready to be placed in the Parliament in July. The minister said that he expected a law to be enacted in this regard this year.
Chandrasekhar said, “At a time when technology is disrupting so fast… there is AI, there is AI compute, there is blockchain, there are all kinds of big disruptive changes happening. At such a time this law has been brought. So this law needs to be future ready and secure.” In the Digital India Act (DIA), the minister sought stakeholder views on mandating tighter regulation for spy camera glasses and other wearable devices. He also called for strict KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements for retailing these products with appropriate legal provisions.
