Dakar (Uttam Hindu News): Senegal Bassirou Diomaye Fay, candidate of the opposition coalition “Diomaye Presidente”, has won the presidential election. “Faye secured a total of 2,434,751 votes, 54.28 percent of the total,” Amadi Diouf, president of Senegal’s national vote counting commission, said at a press conference here on Wednesday. Voting percentage stood at 61.30 percent. His nearest rival Amadou Ba, representing the ruling coalition, trailed with 35.79 percent votes.

Faye, 44, was born in Ndiagniao, 115 km east of Dakar. He holds a master’s degree in law from Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar. He passed the National School of Administration entrance examination in 2004 and became a tax inspector after graduation. He served as Secretary General of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) party, which was dissolved by presidential order in July 2023. Faye was imprisoned in April 2023 and released on March 14 after outgoing President Macky Sall invoked an amnesty law.
