New Delhi. Domestic automakers Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland and Hero MotoCorp are employing more women in their workshops as part of a bid to increase diversity at the workplace. Thousands of women are working in various factories of these companies – from two-wheelers to popular SUVs and heavy commercial vehicles. Over 4,500 women work in workshops across Tata Motors’ six manufacturing plants. The company’s Pune plant has a workshop with an all-women workforce. Over 1,500 women here produce popular SUVs like Harrier and Safari.

These women workers are involved in key activities ranging from welding to robotics loading, vehicle assembly and machine shop. Commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland employs 991 women across seven different plants. Ganesh Mani, President and Head of Operations, Ashok Leyland said that the company has always maintained that there is no preference for any particular gender for any job. Hero MotoCorp, the world’s largest two-wheeler maker, also has over 1,500 women employees.
