Nepal on Monday honored record-setting Sherpa guides and climbers to mark the 70th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest by mountaineers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Edmund Hillary, a beekeeper from New Zealand, and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay created history on this day i.e. 29 May 1953 by conquering the world’s highest mountain peak. Thousands of Sherpa guides and government officials took part in a rally here to mark the 70th anniversary of the Everest climb, waving banners that read Save the Himalayas. Sherpa guide Kami Rita was among those honored at the event organized by neighboring Nepal.

He has climbed Everest a record 28 times. Apart from this, Shanu Sherpa was also honored. He has climbed all the 14 highest peaks of the world twice. Nepal’s Tourism Minister Sushila Sirpali Thakuri also honored Hari Buddha Magar, who climbed Everest. Hari is handicapped in both legs. On this occasion, silver medals were awarded to dozens of climbers from Russia, North America, France and Nepal. The symbol of Everest is engraved on the medal. The awardees also include an Indian national who scaled the 8,848.86 meter high Everest peak in 2021.

For the first time, we are awarding medals to local and foreign climbers who have climbed Everest, said Mohan Lamsal, secretary general of the Nepal Mountaineering Association. Officials said a special program was also organized to honor the families of Norgay and Hillary. Since their strenuous efforts seven decades ago, 7,621 climbers have climbed Everest so far, he said. According to Nepal’s tourism department, more than 600 climbers have scaled Everest this spring.

He told that Everest’s climbing season starts from the month of March and ends in the end of May as after that monsoon winds blow and snow melts making climbing difficult. The Government of Nepal celebrates 29 May every year as Mount Everest Day, as Everest was climbed for the first time on this date. Incidentally, Republic Day is also celebrated in Nepal on 29 May itself.
