Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is visiting the provinces devastated by the February 6 earthquake for the second time. The search operation is being called off due to the possibility of survivors being buried under the debris in the worst disaster in the history of modern Turkey. Turkey’s disaster management agency AFAD put the number of confirmed cases of earthquake death in the country at 41,156. In this way, a total of 44,844 people have been killed by the earthquake in both Turkey and Syria.
campaign paused
Search operations have been suspended in most areas affected by the quake. However, AFAD chief Yunus Sejer told reporters that search teams were stepping up their efforts in more than a dozen destroyed buildings. There is no possibility of anyone being buried alive in the debris. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised the support given by Americans after the earthquake. In a joint news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Blinken said Monday that the US government had responded within hours of the disaster and has so far dispatched hundreds of personnel as well as relief supplies.
Common American people helped
He said that ordinary Americans also extended their helping hand after seeing the heart-wrenching pictures from the earthquake area. NATO said a ship carrying 600 floating containers had left Italy and could reach Turkey next week. NATO has pledged to send more than 1,000 such containers to temporarily house at least 4,000 people left homeless by the quake. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, who visited the quake-hit area last week, called it the worst disaster in the organization’s history.
