Earlier on Friday, two other earthquakes of lesser intensity had occurred in the same area and the tremors were also felt in the nearby city of Surabaya. Due to the earthquake, many buildings in the capital Jakarta were seen shaking for a few seconds.

Jakarta. A strong undersea earthquake struck the eastern part of Indonesia’s main Java island on Friday. However, no casualties were reported. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake measured 6.4 magnitude and occurred at a depth of 8.5 kilometers north of Pasiran in East Java province.

Earlier on Friday, two other earthquakes of lesser intensity had occurred in the same area and the tremors were also felt in the nearby city of Surabaya. Due to the earthquake, many buildings in the capital Jakarta were seen shaking for a few seconds. A house and a village hall collapsed in Tuban district, officials said. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency said there was no threat of a tsunami.
