Jakarta : Strong tremors were felt in western Indonesia on Monday morning, whose epicenter was in the sea. There were no immediate reports of any serious damage or casualties from the quake. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake measured 6.0 at a depth of 48 kilometers with its epicenter 48 kilometers southeast of Sigkil, a coastal district in Aceh province.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has not issued any tsunami warnings. The population of Indonesia is more than 270 million. Due to its position on the ‘Ring of Fire’ in the Pacific Ocean, it is prone to earthquakes. At least 331 people were killed and nearly 600 injured in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that hit Cianjur city in West Java on November 21. Earlier, about 4,340 people were killed in the Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami in 2018. In 2004, an extremely powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, mostly in Aceh province of Indonesia.
