Fernando told Parliament that the shipment imported by the State Trading General Corporation had arrived and that the stock would be released into the market within three days.
Sri Lanka, a country facing bad economic crisis, has imported eggs on a large scale from India. Sri Lanka has imported two million eggs from India to ensure food security in the crisis-hit island nation, Trade Minister Nalin Fernando said on Thursday. Fernando told Parliament that the shipment imported by the State Trading General Corporation had arrived and that the stock would be released into the market within three days. Fernando said the decision to import eggs was based on a decision of a cabinet committee to ensure food security.
In January, when the market saw a shortage, the Department of Animal Production and Health refused to approve the import of eggs from India or Pakistan. Both countries were said to have reported bird-flu outbreaks in the past six months. Himali Kotelawala, director general of the health department, had said that the country of origin of the eggs should be free of bird flu for at least six months. He then told reporters that India had recently experienced a severe outbreak of bird flu, so importing eggs from India is contrary to the Animal Health Diseases Act in Sri Lanka. The Controller General of Imports and Exports cannot be allowed to import eggs from India.
The trade ministry said eggs of Indian origin will be allowed to be used only in the bakery industry after necessary quality checks. The local poultry farmers’ association said imports should come from bird flu-free countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and the United States.
