The world-famous Eiffel Tower, which was closed for six days due to striking workers demanding better maintenance of the landmark and salary hike, reopened to visitors on Sunday.
The operator of the 330-metre (1,083-foot) tall tower said in a statement that it promised to allocate an “ambitious investment of 380 million euros (about US$412 million)” by 2031 for renovation work, after which it will represent workers. An agreement was reached with the employee unions.
The operator has also started negotiations this week regarding salaries which are expected to be finalized next month. The striking employees have demanded an increase in the proportion of revenue from ticket sales.
This 135-year-old tower will be prominently visible during the Paris Games and the next Paralympics from 26 July to 11 August. Olympic and Paralympic medals in Paris contain fragments of a hexagonal piece of iron taken from the historic site. The Eiffel Tower is generally open 365 days a year.
Last year, the monument was closed to visitors for 10 days during mass protests across France against government plans to reform the country’s pension system.
