Islamabad. The Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday disqualified jailed former prime minister Imran Khan for five years after being convicted in a corruption case. Khan, 70, was sentenced to three years imprisonment by a trial court in Islamabad in the Toshakhana corruption case. The court held Khan guilty of earning money by selling gifts he had received during his tenure as prime minister. He was arrested by the Punjab Police from his private residence Zaman Park in Lahore after the court sentenced him.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday issued a notification disqualifying Khan for five years. The ECP cited the court’s judgment and said that Khan was disqualified under Article 63(1) of the Constitution read with Section 232 of the Election Act-2017. According to a copy of the notification accessed by PTI, “Imran Khan Niazi is disqualified for five years.”
