Explosive England opener Alex Hales on Friday announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. Hales made his international debut in August 2011 against India in a T20 International at Manchester. He represented England in 11 Tests, 70 ODIs and 75 T20Is. Hales’ last impressive innings on the international stage was also against India. He played a blistering inning of 86 runs in 47 balls (four fours and seven sixes) in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Hales and Jos Buttler (80 not out) powered England to a 10-wicket win chasing 169 in Adelaide. Hales wrote on Instagram, “I have decided to retire from international cricket.
It has been a privilege for me to represent my country in 156 matches across all three formats. I have made some memories and some friends to last a lifetime. I think now is the right time to move on.” Hales played his last match for England in the 2022 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in Melbourne. He said, ‘England jersey has experienced some highs as well as failures. During this incredible journey, I feel great satisfaction that my last match for England was to win the World Cup final. He was banned for 21 days for drug abuse and the then captain Eoin Morgan termed it as a ‘complete breach of trust’.
