Ankara. Turkish security forces have killed a leader of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) in an operation in Syria. Turkish President Rajab Tayyab Erdoğan gave this information late on Sunday night. Erdoğan told TRT Turk television in an interview that the IS leader was killed in an attack on Saturday. His ‘code-name’ was Abu Husayn al-Qurayshi. Turkey’s president said the country’s intelligence agency MIT had been following him “for a long time”. “We will continue our fight against terrorist organizations without any discrimination,” he said. However, there is no confirmation from IS yet.
Turkey has conducted several operations against IS and Kurdish groups along the Syrian border and captured or killed several suspected terrorists. Abu Hussain al-Qureshi was made its head after the former chief of IS was killed in October. He took command of the group at a time when the terrorist group had lost control of large parts of Iraq and Syria that it once held. However, he has been trying to raise his head again by carrying out deadly attacks in both the countries.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the founder of the Islamic State, was killed by US forces in northwestern Syria in October 2019. His successor, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, was killed in a similar attack in February 2022. Abu’l-Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, who then took command of the group, was killed by Syrian rebels. It is believed that Al-Qurayshi is not his real name but is derived from the Quraysh clan to which the Prophet of Islam Muhammad belonged. IS claims that its leaders come from this tribe.
