Ankara (Best Hindu News): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to present a new constitution in his first speech after being sworn in for the third time. In his inaugural speech at the Presidential Palace, Erdogan said on Saturday that the current constitution (in 1980) was the result of a coup and needed to be replaced with a liberal, civil and inclusive constitution that would strengthen democracy.
The current Turkish constitution was introduced in 1982 and has since been amended 19 times. The last amendment in 2017 introduced the presidential system and ended the parliamentary system, Xinhua news agency reported.
Erdogan also said the country had embarked on a new path and was entering a new era, which he called Turkey’s century, before the country’s parliament was sworn in as president for a third term.
Erdogan won 52.18 percent of the vote in the May 28 presidential election against his rival, Kemal Kilikdaroglu, leader of the center-left Republican People’s Party.
He has been leading the country since becoming the Prime Minister in 2003. He became the first acting President of Turkey after the presidential system was implemented in the year 2018.
