EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Tuesday hit out at China for supporting Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine, calling it a clear violation of Beijing’s commitments at the United Nations. Borrell said, “The side of the attacker cannot be taken. A permanent member of the UN Security Council is expected to stand by the side of the international rules-based order, and China has a moral responsibility to contribute to peace.
Borrell condemned China in the presence of visiting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The comments come just ahead of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s trip to China with French President Emmanuel Macron, where both will stress that EU-China relations will be based on Beijing’s friendship with Russia .
Macron and von der Leyen are expected to caution China against sending arms to Russia during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Even though Beijing describes itself as neutral in the war, pictures and speeches from Xi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow two weeks ago were reflective of the rapprochement between the two trusted friends.
