The announcement came despite Hungary’s strong objections in December and ahead of Thursday’s summit in Brussels. Michel said the move shows that “the EU is exercising its leadership and responsibility in support of Ukraine, knowing what is at stake.”
Brussels. European Council President Charles Michel says the EU’s 27 countries have sealed an agreement on an aid package to Ukraine during an hour-long summit of their leaders. The approval came despite Hungary threatening to ‘veto’ the move.
“Leaders of the 27 EU countries agreed on an additional 50 billion euro (US$54 billion) support package for Ukraine under the EU budget in December and Brussels,” Michel said in a post on ‘X’ and Brussels. The announcement was made ahead of Thursday’s summit in Hungary despite strong objections. Michel said the move shows that “the EU is exercising its leadership and responsibility in support of Ukraine, knowing what is at stake.”
