World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June since 1973. Its establishment reflected people’s understanding and attitude towards environmental problems. World Environment Day has become an important platform to promote the Sustainable Development Goals.
The 52nd World Environment Day is on June 5, whose slogan is Beat Plastic Pollution. Now the world is suffering from plastic pollution. More than 430 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year. Microplastics are the most harmful and long-lasting component of plastic pollution. Its threat to the health of humans and the earth is the greatest. Microplastics are found in everyday objects, such as cigarettes, clothing, and cosmetics.
According to research by the United Nations Environment Commission, the continuous use of certain products increases the accumulation of microplastics in the environment. Microplastics up to 5 mm in diameter enter the ocean through marine plastic litter, pipes, leaks at production facilities, and other means.
In addition to entering our food chain through seafood, people can inhale microplastics by breathing in, ingesting from water and absorbing through the skin. Microplastics have been found in every part of the human body, even in the umbilical cord of newborns. The United Nations Environment Commission warned that the chemicals in microplastics have serious health effects, especially on women.
China is the largest developing country in the world. China pays great attention to reducing plastic pollution. The Chinese people already understand that from the material point of view, plastic has good recycling ability like other materials such as steel and non-ferrous metals. Plastic pollution will no longer be a problem once waste plastics are recycled and disposed of effectively. So the essence of plastic pollution is the leakage of plastic into the environment after use and disposal. After many years of effort, China has established a society-wide plastic recycling system and the most complete plastic circular economic development system in the world. China has become the most responsible country in the control of plastic pollution.
